About us...
Mental Roots partners with schools, businesses and charities to destigmatise and improve mental health in underrepresented ethnic communities, using artistic and innovative solutions.

Mental Roots' main service is youth-focused workshops which integrate Mental Roots' own animation and podcast content. We also provide freelance animation and design services towards community projects that address issues relating to wellbeing and identity in black and ethnically diverse communities.

Who are we for?

Our initial and main focus is mental wellbeing in young people of African/Caribbean heritage, as statistics show this is the most vulnerable ethnic group to severe mental health problems and conditions. Yet, this ethnic group is the least represented amongst professionals providing solutions.

Moving forward, we are also addressing similar issues of inequality for other marginalised ethnic and cultural groups, e.g. Asian and Roma communities.

Our workshops and services are for youth and professionals of all backgrounds, so everyone is equipped with knowledge and tools to help remove racial/cultural inequalities in mental health and community engagement.

Why do schools and community services need us?

In order to change this trend of racial inequalities in mental health support, we need to invest in future generations. We must engage today's youth in a way that speaks THEIR language, through the DIGITAL CONTENT and PLATFORMS they are strongly familiar with.
That's why we use CREATIVE MEDIA and AUTHENTIC community engagement, to reach ethnically diverse youth in ways that many schools, youth organisations and mental health professionals struggle to do on their own.

How it all began...

The Mental Roots movement was birthed through an award-winning animated short with the same name, initially commissioned by Rural Media and the BBC through New Creatives Midlands in 2020. The animation touches on mental health from a black male perspective, and was Directed, narrated and lead animated by the brand's founder, Nathan Addai.
Part of the brand's genesis in 2020 includes the Spotify-commended Mental Roots Podcast, through which Nathan continued the discourse on racial/cultural factors influencing mental health in the black diaspora.
